San Diego parents of twins create handmade indoor play structures

Nov 24, 2023

ROAM Creative Play, a local brand of foldable indoor play solutions, is helping families across the nation stay active with easy-to-use play structures.

"Toddler towers have been around for a long time, (but) nobody's really done anything different with them," said Nia Harris, owner of ROAM Creative Play. "We aim to make our products more versatile so they last in your home for a long time."

The idea for the business started early in the pandemic when Harris and her husband, Graig, needed indoor play structures for their active twins. Graig's passion for woodworking helped shape their early success as his homemade children's climbing frame, the Pikler Triangle, became popular among their friends, family and local mom groups.

Through word-of-mouth and social media, the couple's products gained a lot of traction and in 2020 they launched ROAM Creative Play, an online shop for children's toys and furniture. Handmade by Graig and his team in their Mission Valley workshop, ROAM's wooden items are made to give toddlers and children creative indoor play options.

Nia Harris said the line includes towers, climbers, furniture, a rock wall, an arch and more. The foldable and adjustable toddler tower is their best seller as the structure is able to "grow" along with the child using it. Extensions for the toys are sold separately, making it easier for twins, siblings or friends to play on the structure at the same time.

As a parent of twins, Harris — who's also the president of the San Diego Parents of Twins Club — said she has been able to connect with other families with similar experiences. She said she's glad ROAM is contributing to the community by making play solutions and by supporting local organizations.
